When the boys and the men and fathers of the families were called to serve in war, the people left back at home to do all the work were the mothers and children. They had many new responsibiles to take on, including runing their family farms and towns. There were many women who made a great impression in the civil war, here are a few that had a great impression.

Clara delivered aid to soldiers of the North and South. In 1881 she established the American Red Cross and served as the director until her death. She also established a free school in Bordentown, New Jersy before the American Civil War.

She was a Union spy. She was an actress, then a Civil War spy who was ultimately captured and sentenced to be executed by the South. She was rescued three days before her death, and she was given the honorary commission of Major by President Abraham Lincoln.
